Joe Bunnell was born in Houston, Texas on
December 7, 1954. He has lived in New York, New Jersey, and Delaware for short periods but has returned to Texas and
currently resides there. He has always found a special fascination with unusual looking pieces of wood. Joe started
carving wood and crudely creating pieces that he called "art" from an early age. He says, "It was much
later in life that others would call his work art, and there are some I’m still trying to convince!" Each piece of wood is unique, with its own special qualities. Shape,
grain, color, and type of wood all play a role in the finished product. Holes or deficits naturally occur in wood,
either from insects or degradation. Because he didn’t want to use traditional wood fillers to use as inlays on
his artwork, he began to experiment with metal, stone, exotic wood dust, and seashells. Chunks go in the fireplace,
chips go in the flowerbed, and hopefully there’s something left over to put on the shelf.
Joe enjoys sharing his talent with
others and finds it gratifying that people of all ages enjoy his work. It is extremely satisfying to hear someone
say with disbelief, "you made that from a log?"
Currently he has pieces in England, Germany, Honduras, France, Ireland,
China,Spain, India and through out the United States.
Often using basic shapes, he also likes to design as he goes. Occasionally
someone will ask him to recreate a piece, but only the basic design can be reproduced. Each piece, like its creator,
is truly a custom creation.
