Frequently Asked Questions

Is that wood?

 Yes.  Although high gloss finish sometimes make the pieces look like glass or ceramic.


Will the vases hold water?

 No.  Special orders can be produced to hold glass or plastic containers.


Is the color paint?

 No.  The colors are combinations of nature and inlays.  Stone, metal, wood dust, and seashell are used as inlay materials. A process called spalting is often used.


What is spalting?

 Spalting is a natural process.  It can be encouraged through mechanical process.  Wood is placed in a compost situation, introducing black, red and yellow to the piece.


What is an inlay?

 An inlay is a substance placed into the wood using various techniques.  Stone, metal, wood dust and other substances are crushed then reconstituted using glue or epoxy.


Why is a substance inlayed?

 Sometimes nature creates holes in the wood. Other times holes are created for artistic enhancement.


Can pieces be reproduced?

 No.  Basic designs can be produced but each piece is unique.


How are the pieces finished?

 Most pieces are finished with polyurethane or lacquer. Some pieces however are finished with oil or wax giving them a more natural look and feel.


Where does the wood come from?

 Most is harvested from the woods around my home. However, some woods are imported from around the world.


Are trees harvested for production only?

 No.  Trees that have fallen or have to be removed are used.


Are deer harmed for the use of antlers?

 No.  Drops are used.


What are drops?

 Each year the male deer lose their antlers. They are collected and sold for all types of use.
